Steve Thome of St. Ansgar, Iowa was arrested at 1:05 a.m. on Feb. 11 after Mower County Sheriff’s deputies stopped him on Highway 218, near County Road 5.

After searching the vehicle and Thome, deputies discovered a metal tube, which contained a razor blade and a white substance. The substance later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Thome was taken to jail and is charged with third-degree misdemeanor driving under the influence of a controlled substance and felony possession of a controlled substance.

Roof collapse in Adams

Two calves were killed in a barn collapse at the Albert Paul Smith farm in the area of Adams and Rose Creek.

An excess of snow seemed to have been the cause of the collapse. Investigators determined the parts of the roof were still moving after the initial collapse and brought in a crane to remove the remaining pieces.

A cow may have to be put down, due to injuries sustained during the incident.

Animal abandonment case sent to Co. Atty

Two domestic cats were left alone by their owners for nine days, according to the Austin Police Department.

After receiving a call from a concerned landlord, officers entered the apartment and found no food for the cats, as well as feces all over the apartment’s carpet.

The cats were owned by Gary and Kelly Donahue. The case has been sent to the Mower County Attorney’s office for possible charges.
