The first of several open houses will occur April 14 for those who already have signed a rental agreement, Sherri Detloff of the city Housing and Redevelopment Authority said last week.

A second open house will be held April 18 for the 140 individuals still on the waiting list for apartments. By having a second gathering for these potential renters, Detloff hopes to secure tenants for the seven one-bedroom apartments still available at the complex near Twin Towers.

Detloff and HRA Director Kermit Mahan said tenants should be able to move in on the west side of the complex starting April 1. The east side should be available to move into around the middle of April.

"That must be a cracker-jack contractor," City Councilman-at-Large Dick Chaffee said after hearing of the finish date.

"The work was well done and much appreciated," City Councilwoman Gloria Nordin added at last week’s HRA meeting.

Near the end of May, after furniture arrives for the community room, the HRA plans to have a final open house for the general public. Detloff and Mahan presented the proposed color scheme, consisting of teal, rust, taupe and beige wallpaper, carpet and paint, to HRA board members.

"We’ve had a number of extremely favorable comments about how attractive (the complex) is," Mahan said of the site’s exterior.
