Packer girls claim fourth at Fairmont

FAIRMONT – Fourth place in the Fairmont Cardinal Invitational was brought home over the weekend by the Austin Packers girls hockey team.

The girls played Wilmar on Saturday morning, but lost 4-1.

The Packers took an early lead on a goal by Rhianna Jacobs and an assist by Courtney Huges, however, Wilmar came back with four straight goals and kept the Packers from scoring again.

Wilmar’s got on the scoreboard with 51 seconds left in the first period with a goal by Gretchen Doll, and an assist by Sarah Lohrman and Danelle Doll.

In the second period, Wilmar scored on a goal by Danelle Doll and an assist by Gretchen Doll. An unassisted goal came in the third period to Alissa Doll and Gretchen Doll scored her second goal of the game with an assist by Megan Dueval.

Austin was outshot, 41-36, on shots on goal.

"The girls just ran out of gas in that third game," coach Denny Bray said of the Packers’ effort in the last game of the tournament. "It was a really good game; it was a good tournament."

Goalie Kristine Swancutt had 37 saves at the net for the Packers. The championship game at the Fairmont tourney was won by Totino-Grace of Fridley, 3-1, over Tartan of Oakdale.

The Packer girls next take to the ice at home at Riverside Arena on Jan. 11 against John Marshall of Rochester.
