How fortunate we were to have Gary Nemitz serve the residents of Austin and Mower County.
Last week, Nemitz stepped down after 10 years on the Mower County Board of Commissioners. He cited health problems in saying he no longer was able to represent his constituency at the level deserved. Nemitz also served area residents as a member of the Austin City Council from 1970 to 1981.
However, while Nemitz won’t be serving the area as an elected official, hopefully, we haven’t heard the last from him. He says he will continue to use his voice for the good of the city.
"I hope to continue to provide input as a private citizen," Nemitz said.
We hope it isn’t the last we’ve heard from Nemitz. His years of service to the city and county would prove invaluable in any discussion of issues.
A special primary will be held Feb. 27 to name two candidates to replace Nemitz for the county board’s Fifth District seat. Then a special election will be conducted March 20.
In any event, the person who wins the election has big shoes to fill. Gary Nemitz will be a tough act to replace on the Mower County board.
