WORTHINGTON – The Riverland Community College women’s basketball team won the Battle of the Line Wednesday night.
Converting on 22 of 31 free throws, the Blue Devils took a 70-65 victory home from Minnesota West Community Technical College in Worthington.
Riverland gained its 10th win of the season against four defeats and ran its mark to 2-1 in the Minnesota Community College Conference.
"It was just a good team effort," said head coach Suzy Hebrink. "We were down 11 points in the last 10 minutes and we knew it was a team we should beat on the road. We finally pulled together and did the things we needed to do."
Riverland needed to come back from a 35-30 disadvantage at half to gain the victory.
"It was a sluggishly-played first half," Hebrink said. "We were down five at the break. We woke up at halftime."
Tammy May led the way with 15 points, including 5 of 6 from the line. Sara Nagele scored 12 points and Melissa Bemis added 10 points while Alissa Goetzinger chipped in with 10 points.
Missy Avery had eight points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists and Melissa Rosel added six points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Devils overcame 27 points by Minnesota West’s top scorer.
The Riverland women host Anoka-Ramsey Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
