There’s no doubt about it.
Dozens of calls flooded into the Austin Daily Herald’s newsroom this week in support of the 139-year-old cabin at the Mower County Fairgrounds that seemed headed for the scrap heap only a week ago.
We appreciate the time our readers have taken to share their views with us in your telephone calls and e-mails in telling us of your disbelief that such a treasure of our past could so easily be trashed.
A meeting on Saturday may help determine what is best to do with the historic structure. Preserving it, even though a replica has been erected, seems to be the consensus.
The correct answer is to see that the cabin is preserved somewhere in our county for many more generations to see up close. Replicas just don’t have the same feel or smell. That’s because the real things have aged and offer us a sense of our past.
The cabin needs to be saved.
