It was a nice surprise for Gary Ulland when he went to the Mower County Agricultural Society’s annual meeting last November and walked away as a new Mower County Fair Board member for a three-year term.

"I was asked to come to the meeting and ended up being nominated for the fair board," Ulland recalled.

But Ulland was no stranger to this type of job. He’s also spent four years on the 4-H Advisory Board.

Now Ulland gives his services to the yearly fair, keeping active in many committees. His involvement includes the inside-outside concessions committee, the Fair Square committee, the fair book committee, the 4-H and FFA committee and the grandstand entertainment committee.

Finding entertainment seems to be one of Ulland’s larger jobs.

"This year we’ve added the Farm Bureau Stage," Ulland said. "With two stages, there’s a lot more entertainment to find."

For the past nine months, Ulland has gone to monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. But now that the fair is only days away, Ulland’s involvement has surpassed monthly meetings.

"We’re pretty busy making sure the fair is ready to go when the day gets here," Ulland said.

But he’s not too busy to enjoy the community that common interest affords. Ulland says his favorite part of being a board member so far is the people.

Different meetings and conventions that Ulland has participated in have let him "meet a lot of really friendly people" he would not have met otherwise. For someone who hadn’t planned on being on the Fair Board, Ulland has certainly measured up to the task.

With more than two more years of his term to go, there’s much opportunity for Ulland to contribute to the fairs in the future as well. Luckily, he will be able to bring to those future fairs all of the experience he is gaining now.
