Steer and Heifer Show draws crowd

The 54th annual Midwest Steer and Heifer Show attracted another large crowd of spectators at the Mower County Fair.

Dave Hessman, the show’s judge, also praised the quality of the cattle entered in the show.

Brent Young, president of the Mower County Beef Producers, was the show’s superintendent. Glenn Medgaarden clerked the show and announced the exhibitors and winners.

Held Tuesday evening in Crane Pavilion at the Mower County Fairgrounds, this year’s show attracted 55 steer entries and 23 heifers.

The average weight of each steer in the show was 1,309 pounds and the average weight of each heifer was 1,182.

The top 10 live show steer placings were Brady Gooden, Tim Low, Joe Merten, Bob Merten, April Voigt, Larry Goslee, Jane Pitzen, Merten farms, Paul Heers and Tori Low.

Gooden of Emmons collected grand champion steer honors and Low of Northwood, Iowa, collected reserve champion.

The top 10 live heifer show placings were Mathiason Bros., Mike Finbraaten, Chad Krull, Jim Kellog, Kim Bissen, Terry Voigt, Russ Bissen, Dale Bissen, Brent Young and LuAnn Kellogg.

Mathiaston Bros. of Alden collected grand champion honors and Finbraaten of Adams earned reserve champion honors.

The top showing Mower County producers in the 54th annual show were Joe Merten, Adams, who earned a third-place award in the steer show and Finbraaten of Adams, who earned reserve champion honors in the heifer show.

Carcass show results from this year’s show were not available.
