A 5-year-old girl was shot in the neck with a 177-caliber pellet gun by a 3-year old cousin.
The child was transported to Austin Medical Center and then transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, where surgery was needed to remove the pellet.
The incident happened 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at a rural LeRoy Township residence, according to a Mower County Sheriff’s Department report.
The 3-year-old male cousin of the victim was using a pellet gun belonging to an older cousin.
A 177-caliber pellet gun is an air-powered gun, firing a pellet unlike other BB ammunition in air guns.
No adults were present when the shooting took place.
The incident will be investigated by the child protections services division of the Mower County Department of Human Services for possible child endangerment charges.
Open water hydrants
The Austin Fire Department and Austin Utilities are working cooperatively to help private residents and businesses clean-up in the aftermath of Monday’s flooding in the city.
Austin Fire Chief Dan Wilson announced today, neighborhood fire hydrants can be opened and high-pressure nozzle and hose units used to clean buildings, sidewalks, driveways and other areas of flood debris.
Austin Utilities is waiving its regular $50 fee for use of a meter.
The process begins by contacting the Austin Utilities for a meter and then contacting the Austin Fire Department for a nozzle and hose to use on the hydrant with the meter to measure the amount of water used.
There is no charge.
The fire chief said the city’s water hydrants will provide much more water at a higher pressure for clean-up efforts than garden or other household hoses can provide.
Because Austin Utilities has only four or five meters, according to Wilson, and many requests for the service have been received, the fire chief asks that interested flood victims call the Austin Utilities at 433-8886 first before going there for a meter .
