School board OKs new principal

A contract for Joseph Brown, the newly hired Austin High School principal, was formally approved Wednesday night.
The Austin Board of Education met in the commons at Ellis Middle School for a regular meeting.
The agenda included several human resources items.
Brown replaces Julia A. Espe, who resigned her position to accept a principal’s position at Lakeville High School.
Brown’s contract calls for him to be paid $76,750 a year. When negotiations are completed, any change in the salary schedule will be implemented retroactive to the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year.
Also Wednesday night, the school board accepted the resignation of Jane Knutson, director of food service at AHS.
Certified staff contracts accepted included Tina Watkins, transition first grade, Banfield Elementary; Gia Davison, first-grade long-term substitute, Sumner Elementary School; Brenda Hackensmith, English as a second language, Banfield and Neveln elementary schools; Julie Oakland, fourth grade, Sumner Elementary School; Marsha Rietsema, EBD long-term substitute, Ranch School; Kim Richardson, fourth grade, Banfield Elementary School; Michelle McHenry, social studies, seventh and eighth grades, Ellis Middle School; Sara Ihrke, physical education with adaptive, sixth through eighth grades, Ellis Middle School; Mary Lynn Knoebel, remedial reading and math, Ellis Middle School; Michael Stutz, physical science, Austin High School; Colleen Owens, Spanish and language arts, Austin High School.
The resignation of Kimberly Myers, an AHS science teacher was accepted Wednesday night.
One non-certified contract was approved for Sandra Livingston, a bookkeeper and accountant in the administration building. Livingston will receive $35,000 a year.
Educational assistant layoffs also were approved by the school board members for Bonnie Anderley, Karen Ball, Mary Elwer, Barbara Heiny, Sheryl Monson, Charles Nicholas.
No action was taken on non-unit salaries for the 2000-2001 school year.
