Four Austin players on championship team

The Minnesota Lightning captured the Division II, 15 and under, State AAU Girls Basketball Championship with a 54-53 win over the MGO Gold Elk River High School team the weekend of June 3 and 4.

The Minnesota Lightning captured the Division II, 15 and under, State AAU Girls Basketball Championship with a 54-53 win over the MGO Gold Elk River High School team the weekend of June 3 and 4.

Four Austin players were on the squad. They were Stephanie Eslinger, Shel Sorenson, Stephanie Sundberg and Brittney Erichson.

The team is based out of Owatonna and includes three girls from Owatonna and one each from Faribault and Janesville.

The team was coached by JoEllen Frain of Rochester.

The Lightning’s championship was the first ever by a team from southern Minnesota in any age or division in Minnesota AAU existence.

The girls finish up their AAU season participating in a four-day camp this week in Owatonna coached by Troy Pearson, an assistant to the Minnesota Lynx .

The Minnesota AAU girls basketball program had 300 girls basketball teams competing this year for a total of about 3,000 players.

The National AAU is made up of 59 individual associations and has been in existence since 1949. More than 350,000 kids competed in the 1999 AAU sports programs.
