Bob Nelson, Mower County’s emergency preparedness director, has submitted an application for state disaster assistance today.

According to Nelson, the application first will be reviewed by the state’s division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency before being reviewed for possible federal disaster aid.

Michael Hanson, Mower County Highway Department engineer, estimated the county’s losses at $357,000. The losses include road shoulders and approaches to bridges.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Nelson of the county’s 20 townships revealed $207,680 in losses also to road shoulders and bridge approaches as well as some entire sections of gravel roads washed away by flooding.

Twice within a two-week period, Mower County was struck by torrential rains that caused flash flooding.

The Mower County Board of Commissioners has not yet declared the county to be a disaster area as neighboring Fillmore County’s commissioners have done.

Clayton Township sustained the largest losses. The township board estimates the township’s losses at $50,000.

Both Adams and Bennington townships estimated their losses at $40,000 each, while Frankford and Lodi townships calculated their losses at $25,000 each.
