The Austin boys’ golf team was treated to a round of competition at one of Minnesota’s finest golf courses on Monday at the Hazeltine Invitational.
The invite was hosted by Chaska at Hazeltine National Golf Club – a past U.S. Open site.
The Packers – led by Greg Williamson’s medalist performance – came through with a second-place finish among nine teams. Eden Prairie, the defending State Class AA champs, won the meet.
"This was an incredibly difficult golf course on a very windy day, all of the scores were high," Austin coach Claudia Pilot said. "This golf course was set up very tough, with pin placements tucked behind bunkers, long rough, and the length was over 6,600 yards, which played more like over 6,800 with the wind as strong as it was."
Despite the degree of difficulty, the Pilot said the Packers were lucky to play the course.
"It truly was a treat to play this championship course," she said. "Their greens were the best we have ever seen, they rolled so smooth and true, it makes it fun to putt on."
Williamson played through the conditions better than the rest.
He hit 10 greens on the day, giving himself many birdie chances/ "
"Greg’s score (75) was amazing under the conditions," Pilot said. "He played very steady."
