Host Winona took it to the Austin girls’ basketball team in the third quarter on Tuesday, leading to a 60-34 Winhawks’ win in Winona.
Winona upped its Big Nine mark to 7-4, good for third place. The Winhawks are 10-4 overall. Austin fell to 5-7, 5-11 overall.
At the half, it was a ball game with the Packers trailing by just three, 24-21. But Winona exploded i the third quarter explosion, jumping on the Packers 21-3.
"We were flat in the third quarter," Austin coach Slone Suess said. "Also, Sara Turvey was in foul trouble. It hurts us on both ends of the floor with her sitting. They just beat us down the floor and made some easy shots to build the lead up.
"Winona is a good team with some good shooters. They shot extremely well in the second half going 17-of-24."
Lauren Feller was the leading scorer for Austin with 10 points on the night.
Stacy Fisher scored six, Gina Golberg five, Jenna Cummins four, Sarah Huffer and Jamie Nieland three each, Bridget Burzinski two, and Jana Madson one.
The Austin girls go back on the road Friday, when they travel to Faribault.
