The Austin wrestling team put an end to Albert Lea’s five-match winning streak on Thursday.

The Tigers kept the final score close, 35-24, in the meet at Southwest Junior High School in Albert Lea. But the Packers dominated at key points in the match.

Austin set a team record by registering four technical falls – awarded when a wrestler gains a 15-point advantage, at which point the match is halted.

Spencer Wolner, Joe Cunningham, Mike Cunningham and Chad Mentel picked up the technical falls.

"Austin’s a good team, we knew that going in, and we wrestled them tough," said Tigers coach Larry Goodnature.

Albert Lea fell to 4-3 in the Big Nine.

The Packers, who are in the receiving votes in the Class AAA state poll, upped their record to 13-4, 5-2 in the Big Nine.

Gymnastics

Austin wins in Blue Earth

The Austin gymnastics team won in Blue Earth on Thursday, eclipsing the 140-point plateau for the second straight meet.

Austin won 140.35 to 129.05.

Amy Bickler won the all-around with a 35.905 score built by victories in the floor exercise (9.3) and vault (9.5).

Suzanne Kooy finished second all-around (35.1) and Jenna Bernardo fourth (33.9).

Blue Earth’s Kelly Rozenboom finished third (8.45).

Andrea Anderson of Austin won both events she competed in – the uneven parallel bars (9.25) and balance beam (9.1).

Swimming

Tigers sink Packers

The host Albert Lea swim team edged Austin, 98-89, on Thursday.

The Tigers were led by the Big Nine’s top sprint freestyler – Erik Johnson. He won the 50-yard free in 22.18 seconds which was three seconds faster than any other contender.

Johnson also won the 100 free in a spectacular time of 0:48.30.

Austin was led by diver Beau Webber, who won the event by scoring a career-high 207.3 points.

Joe Bauer picked up Austin’s only other individual first-place – a win in the 200 free in 1:59.67.
