The Mower County Board of Commissioners agreed to give the Mower County Fair Board money to pay off a loan it obtained to pay huge utility bills this summer.

Dave Hillier, 3rd District Mower County Commissioner, had the duty of presenting the Fair Board’s request to the commissioners Tuesday.

According to Hillier, the money was needed after several service calls and high utility bills taxed the Fair Board’s budget.

The Fair Board obtained a bank loan to pay the bills.

"Why didn’t they come to us?" Ray Tucker, 2nd District Mower County Commissioner, wanted to know.

"It was kind of a hurry-up thing," Hillier said.

Denise Mudra, present as a reporter at the meeting and the Fair Board’s office manager, told the commissioners, the request came to them in early October, but was tabled for further study. In the meantime, the Fair Board obtained a bank loan to pay the bills rather than wait for a decision.

How much was the loan? Answer: $14,000.

The commissioners agreed to make a $2,000 grant to the Fair Board and to make its own $12,000 interest-free loan for the remainder.

In other action, the county board:

– Agreed with Jeff Weaver’s recommendation for disposal of the recycling sheds in outlying communities.

According to the solid waste administrator, the existing sheds will first be offered to the communities in which they are located and any not claimed will be auctioned. Three have been requested by the Mower County Housing and Redevelopment Authority. All the sheds will be replaced by new roll-off carts which can be filled by citizens’ recyclables and then loaded onto a truck for delivery to the recycling center at Austin.
