Matt Sellers is calling it a 14-point buck, no matter that one of the those points is an unofficial half-inch.
He deserves the break after shooting his first deer with the first arrow he ever shot at a deer.
Sellers shot the big buck on Friday, while hunting a family friend’s picked and plowed cornfield near Brownsdale.
Sellers and his dad, Tim, saw the deer while walking to their stands, located on the edge of the field and forest.
Matt didn’t think he’d see the deer again.
But, "It came back," Matt said. "I heard it breaking branches behind me."
Earlier in the hunt, Matt saw three does. He even drew back on an arrow, but didn’t let it go.
After the does walked by his stand, Matt sprinkled some artificial buck scent around on the ground.
Soon after, the buck arrived.
And Matt knew what to do.
Matt, a trophy-less slug-hunter experiencing his first bow season, practiced his archery regularly out behind his grandfather’s shop, Austin Power & Equipment.
"I shot quite a bit," Matt said, "using cardboard targets."
Matt’s first hunting arrow was true, hitting the buck above the back leg as it stood broadside 15 yards from the Austin sophomore’s stand.
"I knew I’d hit it because it jumped," Matt said.
The deer ran about 50 yards before collapsing.
"I jumped right out of the tree stand," Matt said. "It was exciting."
