Vikings, Blossoms advance

The Hayfield Vikings and the Blooming Prairie Blossoms, the top two seeds in Section 2AA, Sub-Section 5AA East, easily advanced to Saturday’s semifinals with home court wins.

The Hayfield Vikings and the Blooming Prairie Blossoms, the top two seeds in Section 2AA, Sub-Section 5AA East, easily advanced to Saturday’s semifinals with home court wins.

The Vikings defeated NHREG, 15-12, 15-4, 15-13; the Blossoms beat Kenyon-Wanamingo, 15-6, 15-7, 15-11.

Both teams had balanced attacks. The Vikings had three players in double figures in kills. Sheri Swanson had 14, Nikki Kindschy 11, and Kristin Peterson 10. ‘Tall’ Kristin Petersen had six. Megan Follmuth was the leading server with 10 service points, Jana Wohlers scored nine. She also had 20 set assists. Lacy Wangen had 13. Finally, Swanson had two ace blocks.

For the Blossoms, Ranell Goette was the top attacker with 11 kills, Missy Avery pounded down eight. Avery was also the leading digger with 11. Jana Peterson had eight. Peterson also had four ace serves and five ace blocks. Sara Anderson also had a good day serving with four aces. She also made 22 set assists.

The Vikings now face their second straight Gopher Conference foe Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, which defeated the fourth-seeded Triton Cobras, 15-4, 15-10, 9-15, 15-2. The first serve is at 6 p.m. in Kenyon.

Meanwhile and coincidentally, the Blossoms will take on their second straight Hiawatha Valley League foe, Kasson-Mantorville. The KoMets, like the W.E.M. Buccaneers, pulled off the mild upset.

They went to Montgomery and defeated Montgomery/Lonsdale 15-7, 14-16, 15-10, 15-3. The Blooming Prairie match begins at approximately 8 p.m. in Kenyon.

The finals of the sub-section are next Thursday in St. Peter at Gustavus Adolphus.
