NORTHFIELD – Two missed scoring opportunities in the first half and an ineffective passing game spelled doom for the Austin Packers Saturday night in Section 1AAAA semifinal football action at Northfield.
The Packers’ missed opportunities helped Northfield advance to the section championship with a 23-0 victory.
Austin twice drove inside the Northfield Raiders’ 10-yard line in the first half, only to come away both times without scoring.
The Packers’ first drive inside the 10 ended with a fourth-down illegal forward pass penalty and the second, a 16-play drive, ended with a Raider interception in the end zone.
Northfield, 8-1 on the season, took an early lead with an opening-drive 6-yard touchdown pass.
The Raiders extended the lead to 14-0 at halftime with a 63-yard scoring strike.
Northfield tacked on a third quarter field goal and a late fourth quarter touchdown for the final 23-0 margin.
Austin finishes the season 3-7.
