"It’s fair to say that the whole team was disappointed," Coach Deb Hoyt said. "We were hoping to advance some people into the finals."

But it didn’t happen. Amy Kelly at No. 2 singles and Emily Bue at No. 3 singles each finished third – the highest finishes on the team.

Team scores were not kept at the meet. Earlier in the week, Rochester Mayo edged Austin for the team title by finishing with a 9-0 mark, compared to Austin’s 8-1 record.

Austin’s No. 1 singles player, Laurie Alonso, won the consolation title. She lost in the opening match to Jordan Anderson of Mankato West, 7-6, 6-4, then beat Marissa Swinger of Faribault, 6-0, 6-0, and Century’s Marisa Capezzuto, 6-1, 6-3.

Austin’s No. 2 player, Kelly, won her opening match before losing to Katie Baker of West, 7-6, 6-3. Kelly topped Beca Hoel of John Marshall in the third-place match.

Bue, at No. 3, beat Albert Lea’s Emily Olve, 6-1, 6-0, then fell to Mayo’s Stephanie Freese, 6-2, 6-4. Bue rebounded to finish third by beating Lori Fahrforth of West, 7-6, 6-3.

Austin’s No. 4 singles player, Sara Ormseth, downed Jessica Lee of Faribault, 6-3, 6-1, before being dispatched by Mayo’s Hannah Swee, 6-1, 6-1.

Austin’s No. 1 doubles team of Mindy Neilon and Chelsea McColley opened with a win, 6-1, 6-2 over Faribault’s Sarah Anderson and Maggie Thom. The duo was then defeated by Mayo’s Beth Erie and Stacia Thompson, 6-3, 6-2.

Austin’s No. 2 doubles team of Tiffany Ankeny and Lindy Swedberg won their opener, 6-3, 6-2 over Faribault’s Lyndie Paquette and Lisa Keele. The duo was ousted by Mankato East’s Sally Morrison and Jodi Braunhassen, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Amber Dolphin and Claire Johnson, Austin No. 3 pair, beat Mankato West’s entry, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to the eventual champs, Mayo’s Katie Brown and Sarah Currier, 6-2, 6-1.

The Packers begin play in the Section 1AA tennis tournament on Tuesday against Rosemount. The match will take place at 3:30 p.m. at Wescott Field unless it is raining. If raining, the match will take place at the indoor courts in Owatonna at 4 p.m.

There are 15 teams in the Section 1AA tournament. Austin is the second seed from the south. No. 1 seed Mayo has a bye in the first round. Rosemount (5-13) is the seventh and final seed from the north.

In other action Tuesday, No. 1 north seed Eastview is home against No. 8 south seed Faribault; No. 4 south seed John Marshall is home against No. 5 north seed Northfield; No. 3 north seed Lakeville is at home against No. 6 south seed Century.

No. 2 north seed Red Wing is home against No. 7 south seed Albert Lea. No. 3 south seed Winona is at home against No. 6 north seed Farmington and No. 4 north seed Hastings is home against No. 5 south Owatonna.

Should Austin win, it would play the winner of the Lakeville/Century match on Thursday at home.
