Continuing the recent trend in Austin of increasing public involvement in local government, four people have already turned in applications for the vacant 1st Ward Austin City Council seat.
John Howley, David Solomonson – who is also running for a seat on the Austin Board of Education – Harry Willmott and Neil Fedson have made their interest in the post official. Several others have picked up applications, but have yet to turn them in, city administrative assistant Jeanne Franta said.
The 1st Ward seat, vacated by Roberto Romo after the last council meeting for personal reasons, will be filled by appointment until the next election in 2000.
Applications are available at City Hall, and any resident of the 1st Ward who is 18 or older and an eligible voter may apply. Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. Friday, with interviews by the mayor and council to take place on Monday. The interim council member will be selected by vote of the mayor and council and the official appointment will be made at the Nov. 1 council meeting.
