Registration for the upcoming Austin Youth Basketball Association season wraps-up today.
Registration is at the OakPark Mall today from 6-8 p.m.
Austin Youth Basketball (AYB) is for boys and girls in grades five through eight.
The season kicks off on Oct. 30 with a free clinic at the high school.
The season gets under way in earnest after that with an in-house season through December.
"It’s basic skills and drills and teaching fundamentals," said AYB president Jon Erichson. "At the conclusion of the in-house season, we divide the kids into teams and begin our traveling schedule."
Fifth graders will play four tournaments, three away and one at home. Sixth through eighth graders will play seven tournaments with one at home.
Traditionally, AYB teams play in tournaments throughout the southeast part of the state. Occasionally, the teams make a trip to the Twin Cities to compete.
Annually, the program attracts 180 to 200 kids.
"Everybody makes a team," Erichson said. "We don’t make cuts."
Cost for registration is $25 for fifth graders and $50 for sixth through eighth graders. There is a scholarship program for those who need financial assistance.
AYB will continue to register kids through the day of the clinic.
Erichson said AYB isn’t just for the youth. "We’re always looking fro coaches, parents and volunteers," he said.
AYF to host tailgating party
The Austin Youth Football Association is hosting a tailgating party prior to the homecoming football game Friday.
The party begins at 4:30 p.m. at Wescott Field. The game between Austin and Century begins at 7 p.m.
AYF members will be cooking brats and hot dogs. Pop will also be available. Cost is $2.
