"We played well," Austin coach Deb Hoyt said. "Their strength was No. 1 and 2 doubles and their No. 1 singles player. Even though Laurie (Alonso) defeated their girl zero and zero, they had a lot of nice rallies."

Alonso, Amy Kelly and Emily Bue all won their matches 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles Betsy Hingeveld won 6-1, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mindy Neilon and Chelsea McColley was unhappy with their performance, a 6-1, 6-4 loss. So much so, that they had a long pep talk with Hoyt after the match to boost their confidence.

At No. 2 doubles Lindy Swedberg and Tiffany Ankeny lost in three sets winning the middle one 6-3.

The fifth Austin point came off the rackets of Amber Dolphin and Claire Johnson at No. 3 doubles. They won 6-3, 6-2.

Austin, the No. 2 seeded team in the south half of the section, will face the winner of Lakeville vs. Rochester Century on Thursday at Wescott Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. If the weather is inclement they will more than likely play at the Owatonna Indoor Courts beginning at approximately 4 p.m.

Lyle/Pacelli falls

Lyle/Pacelli ended its regular season with a 7-0 home loss to Winona Cotter.

"We played a lot of real good games, with a lot of deuce games," L/P coach Suzy Hebrink said. "Lack of experience hurt us in not being able to get the two points to win a game."

The best match of the day took place at No. 1 singles where Sammy Jones battled Becky Trickett in two tough sets. Trickett won the first set in a tie break, 7-2, then the second 6-4.

At No. 2 singles Laura Christopherson won three games in the first set and one in the second. Laura Wiechmann played No. 3 singles, but was unable to win a game. At No. 4 singles fifth-grader Anna Hebrink’s match, officially a forfeit, was tied at five in the first set when darkness fell. They went to a tie break which the Cotter player won 7-5.

In doubles, Tammy May and Buffy Judd lost 1 and 1 at No. 1. Erin Evans and Tina Rosenthal were able to win only one game at No. 2, and Ilsa Burke and Christina Edstrom were shutout at No. 3.

Region 1A team play begins next Tuesday. L/P will probably be the seventh seed and will face either Cotter or Cannon Falls.
