The soccer seasons came to a close for the Austin boys and girls teams, which fell in the section playoffs on Tuesday.
Girls
Rochester Century 5, Austin 0
The home Panthers, the Big Nine Conference champs, were just too much for the Packers in the Section 1AA quarterfinals match up.
The Packers put up a fight early and didn’t allow a Century goal until 22 minutes were gone in the first half.
But once the Panthers scored, the Packers went on the defensive. Century led 3-0 at halftime.
"They pushed us back and packed us in," Coach David Ingalls said. "Their defense was excellent. They didn’t allow much."
Austin’s Katy McClain and Jamie Nieland were able to create some offense for the Packers but not enough to turn the tide.
The Packers finish with a winning record this year at 8-7-2.
Ingalls said he hopes to see Mayo or Century move on to state so the conference can get some respect and exposure.
Boys
Eagan 6, Austin 1
Like the girls, the Austin boys stood strong early.
A Drew Oesterle header almost gave Austin a 1-0 lead, but it didn’t find the net.
But Eagan took control with a goal midway through the half.
Austin senior Chris Lynch scored to make it 4-1.
"Eagan was a senior dominated team," Coach David Graham said. "They played a very fast style. We’re young and like to keep it slow and under control."
Austin finished 5-10-3 in a year marked by big steps of improvement.
