The Packers defeated the Mankato West Scarlets 7-0 Thursday on the Wescott Field Courts.

"I was looking at maybe a 4-3 win," Hoyt said. "We both have five players returning from last year’s team and we beat them 4-3 last year.

"Winning 7-0 was pretty nice. Winning against Winona on Tuesday gave us a lot of confidence. Also helping us this season was participating in Jeff (Hoyt’s) camp this summer. Playing and learning all summer helped them a lot."

The top three singles players won fairly easily dropping only five games between them. At No. 1 Laurie Alonso lost only one game in each set, Amy Kelly after falling behind 3-2 in the first set ran off the next 10 games, and Emily Bue at No. 3 shutout her opponent. These three are now 15-1 on the season with Bue having the only loss.

The three Austin doubles teams also made easy work of it with everyone winning in straight sets. At No. 2 the newly formed partnership of Amber Dolphin and Claire Johnson won for the second time this week, winning 6-1, 6-1.

"They have really clicked," Hoyt said. "They both have the same mentality, really focused and determined."

The last match of the day went on into the darkness.

The match went on so long that they had to start the third set with the score 3-3. Austin’s Betsy Hingeveld pulled it out winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. She was behind in every set. She rallied from a 5-2 deficit, one service break, in the first set and also dropped the first two games of set three to trail 5-3 before pulling out her reserves for the big win.

"It was awesome for her to win," Hoyt said. "It was fun the way she pulled it off and toughed it out like that."

The Junior Varsity won 8-2. At No. 1 Singles Sara Ormseth won 10-3. It was her first competition after pulling a muscle two weeks ago. At No. 2 Rachel Scheidt also won 10-3 and at No. 1 doubles Noelle Wiebelhaus and Caroline Hewitt won 10-6.

Austin (3-3, 2-0 in the Big Nine) next travels to Waseca on Tuesday.
