John David Kamp told Austin police investigators "he was afraid of getting a speeding ticket," when he saw their red lights in his rear view mirror.

Kamp sped off into the night pursued by Austin police until he lost control of his vehicle and drove into a cornfield south of Austin, according to police reports.

Capt. Curt Rude said today, Kamp, 28 of rural Austin, has been charged with felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and possessing a driver's license with the wrong address.

Kamp's vehicle was not the one police were seeking, when the chase took place near 2:54 a.m. Thursday. Austin police are still looking for a blue Ford Explorer SUV described to have a "sporty" style and driven by a man wearing a black and green jacket. According to an Austin Police Department report, the incident began early Thursday morning, when attendants at the Kwik Trip convenience store and gas station in Austin reported a gas drive-off.

An officer responded to the scene immediately and saw red tailights disappearing south along 12th Street SW.

The officers followed first one vehicle and then passed the car to pursue the next vehicle. That vehicle, which did not match the description of the gas drive-off vehicle, accelerated and failed to halt despite the police car's red flashing lights and siren.

The chase continued south out of Austin along Highway 105, passed KAUS AM-FM studios and near the Riverbend Campground.

Police discovered a car in a cornfield near 130th Street and went to the house nearby. A man identified as Kamp answered the door and admitted attempting to elude police because "he didn't want to get a speeding ticket," according to the police report.
