There was an intense battle for first place in the Southeast Conference West Division Thursday night in LeRoy. In a five-game affair, it was the visitors from Lyle/Pacelli who were triumphant. They won 13-15, 15-10, 15-2, 13-15, 15-13.
"This is the first time in a long time that either Lyle or Pacelli has been in first place in its conference in volleyball," L/P co-coach Norm Blaser said.
"It was a very good match," LeRoy-Ostrander coach Amy Maixner said. "It was a fun match to watch. Both teams did a great job of digging."
It was exciting to the very last point. L/P led game five 14-13. Fourteen servers went to the line without scoring a point. L/P finally game through with the elusive 15th point on Melissa Ehret’s serve. Laura Nelson put the ball down with her 20th kill of the night.
Nelson had the kind of night most high school athletes only dream about. She was 23-of-23 serving with 16 service points. Her 20 kills came on 16-of-17 attacks and four tips. She made three ace blocks. Finally, she had 27 digs.
Kassie Baldner smacked 11 kills and dug out 10 balls. Joan Sheedy had 14 kills. Ehret was 26-of-26 serving with 16 service points. She also had 26 digs. Amy Bickler had 23 set assists and dug out 15 balls.
LeRoy had a good night serving with three players putting up perfect numbers. Kelly Davis was 22-of-22, Lindsay Mensink 17-of-17, and Annie Winfield 12-of-12.
Mensink had eight blocks, seven digs, and 11 kills. Winfield had eight kills, six digs, and 11 blocks. Davis had 13 set assists, five blocks and four digs.
Lyle/Pacelli (6-4, 3-0) takes part in a tough Wabasha-Kellogg tournament on Saturday while LeRoy gets ready for a non-conference match at home against Elgin-Millville on Monday.
