Hayfield 3, Goodhue 2
After playing only one five-game match all of last season, the Vikings got their work in early this year with a five-game win over the Goodhue Wildcats Tuesday in Hayfield.
The Vikings defeated the Wildcats 15-5, 12-15, 13-15, 15-3, 15-9. Blocking was the key to the win. Hayfield picked up 16 ace blocks in the contest with Sheri Swanson leading the way with eight. Kristin Petersen, the middle hitter, stuffed five.
"They had a couple of good hitters and we had some trouble stopping them," Hayfield coach Deb Harvey said. "We talked about blocking after falling behind 2-1 in games. We adjusted our timing a little. Earlier we weren’t jumping in time to make the block."
The top Wildcat hitter was Joanna Quast with 24 kills. Kristin Peterson, the outside hitter for Hayfield, and Swanson lead the way for the Vikings with 16 apiece. Setting them up were Tara Wohlers with 24 set assists and Bri Simon with 20. Kellie Krueger was the top server for the Vikings with 21 service points.
