Jason Brent Meyer, a 28-year-old part-time officer, was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Meyer resided in Spring Valley.

Meyer was en route to assist a Mower County Sheriff’s Department deputy on a call in Racine.

Meyer was westbound on Highway 16. When he turned to go north on Highway 63, near the Grass Shack, Meyer lost control of the car, which skidded and struck a utility pole at 11:05 p.m.

After being extricated from the car, Meyer was airlifted by Mayo One to St. Mary’s.

Six Minnesota State Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene, as did officers from Mower, Olmsted and Fillmore counties. Grand Meadow and Spring Valley ambulances also arrived on scene.

Meyer’s death is believed to be the first on-duty death of an officer in more than 50 years, said Mower County Sheriff Barry Simonson.

The state highway patrol is investigating the accident.
