Troy Goergen has had to wear several hats in his two years as the general manager of the Southern Minny Stars. Now the Adams native is looking to wear only one.
Goergen has accepted a position in the marketing department at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. Goergen, who began as an assistant to then-general manager Kevin Graber in the summer of 1997, before taking over as general manager in fall of ’97, will begin his new position as assistant director of marketing for Bison athletics immediately after the Northwoods League regular season ends on Sunday.
Goergen’s new position will involve dealing with corporate sponsors of NDSU athletics, one of his many responsibilities with the Stars.
It was the numerous responsibilities with the Stars that Goergen said made him realize on what he wanted to focus his career.
"With the Stars I had to worry about things like if we had enough hot dog buns for a game along with trying to figure out how to get 500 people in the stands," he said. "With this job I can get more into sports marketing, which is what I really like to do.
"When I took the GM job two years ago, I only wanted to do it for a couple of years before moving on to minor league baseball or a college I’m moving forward with my career step by step."
Goergen said that since the season the season will be over soon, the Stars won’t be in a rush to fill his void. He also said he would be available help the Stars during the transition if possible, before a new general manager is hired.
Goergen said he expects the Stars to hire someone from within the Northwoods League as his replacement.
"There’s plenty of quality qualified interns in the Northwoods League," he said. "I know there’s a few that I talked to during the season that could do the job."
