Hotel rooms in Austin have become a scarcity as two nation softball tournaments have invaded the city this week.

The Amateur Softball Associations Men’s 23-and-under and Boys’ 18-and-under National Championships will be this weekend, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on tonight at the five-diamond complex at Todd Park. The first game will immediately follow opening ceremonies. A total of 17 teams from seven different states will compete for the titles in the two-day tournament is double elimination. Saturday’s games will begin at 8 a.m.

This is one of 63 national championships that the ASA conducts yearly all across the county in adult and Junior Olympic classifications.

Taylor Carlson, Miss Austin 1999, will sing the national anthem at the opening ceremonies.

Admission is $3 for Friday night and $5 for Saturday’s games.

The two tournaments were originally scheduled to be played in Florida, but only three had committed, so the tournament was cancelled. One of the scheduled teams to participate suggested Austin and since it was announced, 14 teams more teams form a total of six different states have committed.
