Market Hog show brings out 40 hogs

Gary Chicos, Albert Lea, was the big winner at the 1999 Mower County Fair Midwest Market Hog Show.
Held Sunday night, the show attracted 40 head of hogs, according to Dan Vermilyea, the show’s director. Last year’s show attracted 93 entries.
Ben Bartusek of New Prague was the show judge.
Beginning with the gilt competition, Chicos and Matt Nielsen showed the top placing gilt, weighing 260 pounds in the lives show to earn champion honors. They also showed the reserve champion gilt, another 260 pound hog.
The duo of Chicos and Nielsen also had the seventh placing hog.
Other top ten lightweight gilts included: Allen Abbe, Alden, third place; Jim Cords, Alden, fourth place; Neuvirth Farms, Elkton, fifth place; Sheldon Stevermer, Easton, sixth place; Rick Neuvirth, Elkton, eighth place; Bettie Miller, Stewartville, ninth place; and Chris Sauer, Lewiston, tenth place.
Brenda Stevermer, Easton, showed the champion barrow in the live show.
Chicos/Nielsen, Albert Lea, showed the reserve champion live show barrow.
Other top ten placings in the live barrow show included: Chicos/Nielsen, third place; Neuvirth Farms, Elkton, fourth and fifth places; Ted Frank, Dexter, sixth place; Allan Abbe, Alden, seventh place; Myron Dammann, Elkton, eighth place; Larry Miller/LOMILL Farms, Stewartville, ninth place; and Bradley Miller, Stewartville, tenth place.
Barrow carcass show results showed Brenda Stevermer, Easton, exhibiting the top ranked barrow. The 252 pound hog had a 10th rib fat rating of 0.51, 8.10 loin eye area and 60.65 percent lean rating.
Neuvirth Farms, Elkton, exhibited the second highest barrow carcass show entry. The 238 pound hog had a 10th rib fat rating of 0.77, loin eye area rating of 8.81 and 60.41 percent lean rating.
Other top ten barrow carcass show results included: Bettie Miller, Stewartville, third place; Chicos/Nielsen, Albert Lea, fourth and seventh places; Larry Miller/LOMILL Farms, Stewartville, fifth place; Ted Frank, Dexter, sixth place; Bradley Miller, Stewartville, eighth place; Neuvirth Farms, ninth place; and Bob Balgeman, Lyle, tenth place.
The top rated gilt in the carcass show was exhibited by Bradley Miller, Stewartville. The 244 pound hog had a 0,60 10th rib fat rating, 9.54 loin eye area and 63.84 percent lean rating.
The reserve champion gilt carcass was exhibited by Bettie Miller, Stewartville. The 234 pound hog had a 0.36 fat rating, 7.91 loin eye area and 62.03 percent lean rating.
Other top 10 gilt carcasses exhibited were by Bradley Miller, Stewartville, third place; Rick Neuvirth, Elkton, fourth place; Chicos/Nielsen, Albert Lea, fifth place; Chris Sauer, Lewiston, sixth place; Bettie Miller, Stewartville, seventh place; Sheldon Stevermer, Easton, eighth place. Larry Miller/LOMILL Farms, Stewartville, ninth place; and Ray Stevermer, Easton, tenth place.
All carcass show hogs were taken to Hormel Foods Corporation/Quality Pork Processors, Inc., Austin, for slaughtering.
