Two males were arrested early Monday, after citizens noticed them checking cars along the 1900 block of 4th Ave. NE.
Nathan Duane Swanson, 20 of 2118 3rd Ave. SE, and a 17-year-old boy were taken into custody at 2:30 a.m.
When Austin Police responded to the scene, the 17-year-old dashed and hid in the box of a pickup truck. A police dog called to the scene was able to track and find the boy.
Swanson and the boy were in possession of several items taken from cars, including tools, sunglasses, a flashlight, a bottle of cologne, and more. According to the police report, the two males checked a number of cars on the avenue.
Both were cited with tampering with motor vehicles and possession of stolen property. Because he fled, the boy was also cited for obstructing legal process.
At the moment, the stolen property is in evidence, but the Austin Police will be returning it to the owners.
Police dog passes test
The Austin Police Department dog, Rocket, was recertified as a "Police Dog No. 1" at the K-9 trials in Onamia, Minn. last week.
Rocket placed fourth in the overall competition with a score of 673, out of a possible 700. There were 51 dogs in attendance.
Rocket is still not 100 percent recovered from ligament surgery, but is improving daily as evidenced by Rocket finishing with the top scores in criminal apprehension and handler protection again this year.
Rocket also received a commendation for locating a loaded handgun behind Bremerton Apartments earlier this year.
K-9 officer Matt Holten was elected the Region 12 president by the membership. The term will start Jan. 1, 2000 and run for two years.
While at the K-9 trials, Holten located a male Malinois and worked out a breeding arrangement between the dog’s handler and the retired Plainview handler who has Rocket’s daughter.
Holten will get the pick of the litter, which he hopes to have this fall. He will train the pup as Rocket’s replacement. The cost of the pup to the department: a one dollar bill.
