The Austin Greyhounds were eliminated from the Minnesota state amateur baseball tournament by St. Michael on Sunday in Marshall.
Like they did in an opening round loss to Apple Valley, the Hounds committed six errors in handing St. Michael a 13-7 win.
"We were happy to be at state," Hounds skipper Bryant Olsen said. "But I just wish we could have played like we did to get there.
"It’s not like anybody overpowered us. We just gave away two games."
The Hounds led 3-2 heading into the fourth when disaster struck. With two on and two outs, second baseman Mitch Mullenbach’s throwing error opened up a seven-run floodgate.
The Hounds never recovered and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, the same mark as the Hounds’ 1997 state team.
Tate Cummins rapped a bases-clearing triple in the eighth and later scored on a groundout to help the Hounds close the gap.
Cummins had a terrific tournament, batting .500 with two home runs and eight RBI.
"They’ve got an all-tournament team and he deserves to be on it," Olsen said.
