Picks: Backup QBs getting a chance

Published Wednesday, October 1, 2008

With some backup QBs stepping into action the war of attrition has already begun in the NFL season. I just hope that’s the last time I have to see Matt Flynn take the field for my Packers — it was scary.

Now to the picks.

Chicago at Detroit

Pick: BEARS

Take a quarterback with a penchant for throwing careless interceptions (Kitna) and pair him with a defense that forces a lot of turnovers (the Bears) and what do you get? A blowout of epic proportions.

San Diego at Miami

Pick: CHARGERS

The single wing made Ronnie Brown look like superman against the Patriots, but now that that formation has been studied on film, Mr. Brown will look more like himself.

Washington at Philadelphia

Pick: EAGLES

I’ve got to believe Brian Westbrook plays this week, which should give the Eagles a win. The Redskins are looking suddenly tough with three straight wins — including a huge one in Dallas last week.

Tampa Bay at Denver

Pick: BRONCOS

The Bucs threw three picks against the Packers and should’ve lost. The mile-high air should slow down the warm weather Tampa team.

Atlanta at Green Bay

Pick: PACKERS

Even if the aforementioned Flynn must start this game, Green Bay should win if they can slow down Michael Turner.

Seattle at New York Giants

Pick: GIANTS

In a clear example of why the NFC West is one of the worst divisions in football history, the Giants should win this one in their sleep.

Kansas City at Carolina

Pick: PANTHERS

The Chiefs had a big win last week and should go right back to losing.

Indianapolis at Houston

Pick: COLTS

With a week to rest their ‘walking wounded’ the Colts should bounce back against the winless Texans.

Buffalo at Arizona

Pick: BILLS

Still picking the Bills until the lose.

Cincinnati at Dallas

Pick: COWBOYS

The cake walk of all cake walks for Dallas.

New England at San Francisco

Pick: PATRIOTS

Never pick against the Pats off a bye week and it looks the 49ers are coming back to reality after New Orleans beat them down last week.

Pittsburgh at Jacksonville

Pick: JAGS

Barely beating the Browns and Ravens does not make the Steelers look very tough. Jacksonville will be fired up in front of their home fans, and David Garrard will avoid the Pittsburgh pass rush.

Minnesota at New Orleans

Pick: SAINTS

Gus Ferrote or Drew Brees? I think I’ll go with the guy under 36 years old.

Last week: 8-5; overall record: 44-16
