We all need to take more responsibility for our government. The leaders making the decisions (good or bad) are the ones we put in office. Too many times too many take too little time learning about the issues and the candidates. With complaints about the campaign being too long now being the popular chant, it is amazing to see polls which prove that most voters are totally unaware of the details of the candidates.

I admire a candidate who calls the people into action. Mark, should you run again, you have proven one more time that you are the candidate of class, common sense, and vision.

Should you not run again, our community remains better off because of your presence with us. Keep up your good work. Out of office you have done more for Austin than most who have official titles.

My favorite part of the article is the statement, "it is clear the Robbins block is the preferred site for geothermal, because it has the capacity to take care of all geothermal needs".

What is clear is that there are other options that do not involve destroying commercial (taxpaying/job producing) properties, or the spending of millions of tax dollars. Those options also have the "capacity to take care of all geothermal needs."

The Robbin's block is now under consideration because certain men have a difficult time admitting when they are lost in their own plans.

WalkingCrow - good points all around.

The story does miss it a bit on the facts - likely due to Oscarson mis-speaking rather than the reporter getting it wrong.

The petition is not circulating. It is complete and has been submitted to the EQB.

The city will be the one's who get this back. Since most of the council members have publicly stated their objection to the unnecessary destruction of the Robbin's block, and since we are calling ourselves a "Cool" city due to our commitment to Green policies, I hope the City demands a full environmental assessment be done.

Courage and Principals councilmen. Courage and Principals.

With Raskin's departure, it is time to start taking nominations for the next Savior of the Community. The position is currently vacant. To qualify, one must only be perceived as having no flaws or blemishes, and for having the power to single handedly solve the communities problems (either in a particular sector or in general). People of such magnanimity are rare, so perhaps we have lost our one and only Savior of the Community currently residing here. I suspect that those who have supported Raskin hold that opinion. After all, they have predicted the end of all things good about Austin. I for one continue to hold out hope that there is yet one more among us who can carry the heavy load of "Savior of the Community." Any nominations?

I thought the Mayor did a fine job of negotiating. He started by telling the County that the City would do anything and everything the County asked to get the jail downtown. This sort of bending over is how all successful negotiations begin.

He then had meetings with County officials for the purpose of them telling him their "price". They told him that he had to give up the Robbin's block. The mayor honestly told them that the Council would never support such a thing. He then hatched the idea of giving the County the money instead of the block even though the end result would be the same - destruction of the block.

The mayor - continuing to advocate for the City of course - proceeded to publicly tell the council and the businesses on Robbin's block that the block was safe. It wasn't until after the votes were final that the Mayor announced that he "knew about the plans for the Robbin's block the whole time".

Is it any wonder that the City did so well in the negotiations with our brave Mayor taking the lead. As he has so eloquently said, the jail downtown is the sole source of economic salvation for our citizenry. With logic like that, what price would be too high?

As a business owner, I can't wait for my first convict to come shopping at my store once the new jail is built. After all, my business has thrived for decades with the jail just a few blocks away. One must only look at the state of the downtown just a few years ago to understand the undeniable truth in the Mayor's decree - jails do make for thriving economies.

Phipho - your analysis of my name lacks creativity and depth. It is as concrete as your blind faith in the savior raskin who has now volunteered for martyrdom. The name is as much an intentional pun as it is an intentional message. Perhaps you get it, perhaps you don't. After all, you chose the name Phipho which in and of itself tells a great deal about you.

If you read my posts more carefully, and I could translate them into your native language if that would be helpful - I have not so much defended Rude as I have defended fact. I have no allegiance to Rude. I had no ax to grind against raskin until she displayed for all the world the very character flaws that the community questioned when they caste their ballots. In fact, it was her very flaws that forced her to choose to flee from personal growth and toward oblivion in academia.

At this point, I believe all members of the school board are behaving like children and they are now causing unneeded damage to the marginal reputation of our schools. However, this is not to excuse the wholesale carpet bombing that raskin inflicted on that same reputation in her flailing and desperate attempt to keep the community from seeing her true face. Remember, all the Board asked of her is that she (like them) work with a leadership coach for a year. They committed to personal growth. She fled.

Her parting shots at Rude, of which I must assume you approve, are no less grotesque than her first volley. She is a shameful person who has brought permanent disgrace to herself and longterm damage to her district.

My hope is that the Board can now move on and hire someone who is less about personal protection and power and more about team building and advancing a student focussed agenda. What a breath of fresh air that would be.

"We don't need Megalomaniacs on a School Board" but we do need them in the administration and more importantly we need them here - posting drivel (eg 3dnbbs, phipho, and the other blind "Raskin at all cost" defenders". We need more people who can attend a meeting and then misrepresent what occurred. We need people who cannot comprehend that there were two meetings and that the reports of Rude's motives pertain to the first meeting and cannot be explained away or discounted by discussions of what happened at the second meeting.

I do agree with 3dnbbs in one respect. When God perfected the creation of the idiot, he created the school board so that his perfect idiots would have a natural habitat. Perhaps 3dnbbs did not understand that is what Mr. Clemens meant with his quote. Perhaps that is because 3dnbbs is a graduate of AHS where we don't bother to teach, only to argue incessantly about irrelevancies while the district flounders in incompetency.

Three cheers for the idiots on the school board, they have proven that only the very best idiots get to the top in Austin. The second best settle for blogging here.

It is amazing the people who are saying that he should have done his homework before the meeting. He asked for the additional information. Picha and Raskin acted like his request was too much trouble for them. They acted like he should vote yes simply because they told him to vote yes. He asked if his protest vote would make a difference in the outcome and was told no. He votes to send a message, with the intent that his vote not hold up the hiring of anyone. Their mistake is exposed and it is only Rude who is in the cross-hairs. This myopia is fascinating. Is no one looking at this in an objective fashion? Why do Picha and Raskin get a pass everytime they act irresponsibly while the board members who just want to cast intelligent votes are treated like the problem.

Here is a suggestion. Let's disband the board. If they are expected to ask no questions, get no information, have no power, and assert no influence, then why do we have them. What a colossal waste of time and money. Let's impose a dictatorship led by a Superintendent who serves for life.

According to some, that is essentially what we had before the election. According to others, that is where we should return. Does anyone see where that takes us - and that it isn't good? Perhaps it is just me. Perhaps the schools should be a fiefdom. A super majority of voters thought not last fall. Perhaps they have all changed their minds. If so, lets put the dictatorship idea on the ballot. In the short term, the only ones it would harm would be the lawyers - least those who like to investigation the investigations done by others into who should do more investigations into the results of the original investigation of the false charges leveled by a Superintendent trying to overturn the results of an election.

Not true, the postponement occurred simply because of the Court's calendar. Either way, it is not Rude who is dragging this out.

Rude does have a CDL license. Whether there is drug testing or not (likely is), is not relevant since there has never even been the slightest suspicion that Rude has ever taken drugs or been involved in drugs in any way.

Remember, his charges (no matter how they are titled) boil down to his having evidence in his possession in a room at the police station where they shouldn't have been. In other words, his conduct was "police misconduct" not doing drugs. This is a fact the simpler minds miss (I am not referring to you Crow).
