Teen burned in fire

Published Friday, September 18, 2009

A Grand Meadow teenager suffered second-degree burns Wednesday after a fire started at his house.

Caleb Kassel, 16, kicked over a plastic gasoline can that was on fire in the garage at 510 First Ave. S.E., causing burns to his legs, according to a Mower County sheriff’s report.

He was taken by ambulance to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m., and after the can was knocked over, flames spread into the garage, causing some damage.

The house was also damaged some by the fire, though the bulk of the damage was in the garage.

Kassel’s mom Cindy, 35, was in the home during the fire but did not have to leave the property. The report does not indicate how the fire started. The teen was the only one near the garage at the time, but he told authorities he did not start the fire.
