Teen receives 20 years probation for role in break-in

Published Friday, November 20, 2009

An Austin teenager will serve 20 years probation for his role in a July home break-in.

John Allan William Wood, 18, was sentenced Thursday in Mower County court. In addition to the probation, he will also pay $395 in fines and do 40 hours of community service.

He also is prohibited from contacting two other co-defendants in the case.

Matthew Allen Smith, also 18, was sentenced Wednesday to probation for his role in the incident. A 16-year-old male was assigned probation in August.

According to a court complaint, a homeowner on Sixth Street Northwest said he saw the three from his bedroom window around 10 a.m. on July 30. When two of them entered through his front door, he came at them with a pool stick, yelling at them to leave.

The man grabbed Wood while he called police, but Wood got away, according to the complaint.

Police were unable to find the teenagers at the scene, but the man recognized two of the males and was able to identify them.

Police were able to later track down both and make arrests.

At the Law Enforcement Center, the 16-year-old male told police that Wood and Smith had entered the property. The 16-year-old said he left without doing anything.

He also said Wood and Smith were responsible for two stolen bikes they had used to get to the house.

Maybe the City needs an ordinance to make the parents responsible for their children's actions, instead of the community having to put up with PUNKS like these.

In this politically correct world we live in, maybe we should take a page from yesteryear and put them in JAIL or SEND into the MARINE CORP or ARMY where they would learn more than enough about DISCIPLINE and RESPECT in a very short time!

Twenty years of probation is nothing more then a slap on the wrists, have them do something constructive like fight for their country in Iraq or Afganistan and learn to be a respected citizen.

These "JOKERS" will be back in the news for similar reasons in less than a year, mark my word?

I don't see why they can't be put in jail or prison for BURGLARY! I guess with them being on probation they will see the inside of a jail or prison cell soon enough.

Its a good thing the homeowner didn't beat to death the suspect he caught...I am sure he'd be gone for life.

20 years on probation is no slap on the wrist! That is a HUGE commitment and this kid will have to stay on the straight and narrow for a long time. And if they don't, they very well get locked up!

LTHB is right.. 20 years of probation is not something to look foward to... I think its worse than a year or five in jail.

The problem is they most likely will not learn... and will end up in jail at our expense later and there is also the expense of having them on probation for 20 years...

I like danp's Idea send um into the Army... Or make it 10 years probation and give them more community service and make them go out and clean up our parks and shovel sidewalks for those that cannot clean up our public parking lots etc...

Well they are going to need customer for the new county jail.

Violate her, go slow on court dates; the jail stays full.

Need a newer and larger jail.
