District proposes reducing polling places
Published Tuesday, May 12, 2009
The Austin Public School District has proposed reducing its number of polling places from nine to six, starting with the 2009 election.
Current polling sites
• Ward 1, Precinct 1 — Austin Public Library
• Ward 1, Precinct 2 (includes Mapleview) — Austin High School
• Ward 2, Precinct 1 — Southgate Elementary
• Ward 2, Precinct 2 — Banfield Elementary
• Ward 3, Precinct 1 — Woodson Kindergarten
• Ward 3, Precinct 2 — Ellis Middle School
• Austin, Lyle and Windom townships (Mower County ) — Austin Town Hall
• Lansing, Red Rock, Udolpho and Waltham townships (Mower County) — Lansing Town Hall
• Newry, Oakland, London and Moscow townships (Freeborn County) — Oakland Town Hall
The upcoming election will be the first in which the district will use electronic voting equipment from Mower County. Due to the cost of election judges and voting equipment, the county auditor has recommending reducing the number of polling sites.
The district has proposed eliminating town hall sites and merging the district townships into the city polling sites.
“We think there will be minimal disruption,” said interim superintendent Bruce Anderson during the school board meeting Monday night.
The district has been communicating with the townships about the proposal, which would save the district nearly $1,400.
Austin, Lansing and Oakland town hall polling sites are proposed for elimination starting in November. The school board will vote on the proposal at its next regular meeting June 8.
