LETTER: Stop using 'illegal'
Published Tuesday, June 9, 2009
No human being is illegal. The appropriate term to use in your immigration-related news coverage is “undocumented.” Please stop using the pejorative term “illegal,” which is just as bad as using the N-word for African-Americans.
Carl Sack
Superior, Wis.
Editor’s note: The Austin Daily Herald follows Associated Press Style in our reporting, and the term “illegal immigrant” is both accurate and acceptable under AP guidelines.

Saying calling someone "illegal" and using the "n-word" are the same is just plan ignorant.

If your in this country and you do not have legal documentation... (school or work visa, citizenship, etc.) you are here illegally ( breaking the law). In more simple terms for the ignorant... (Carla Sack)... breaking the law is a criminal act!

Political correctness run amok. There are legal aliens and illegal aliens. Period.

I want to clarify something that Rhino states as if it is an undeniable truth but in fact is a drastic over simplification.
"Breaking the law is a criminal act!" is not a true statement.
There are many, many types of laws, only a small fraction of laws are laws for which violation constitutes a crime. So, to say that any violation of the law is a criminal act cannot possibly be true - except to those who are "ignorant" (another word cavalierly tossed around) of the vast expanse of the law.
Now, to be sure, illegal and criminal are not same either. Illegal - means "contrary to the requirements of law" and can apply to many different types of laws - some criminal and some not.
So, in the end, the phrase "illegal immigrant" to refer to a person who has immigrated here contrary to the requirements of the law is an accurate statement - regardless of whether their being here constitutes a crime.

Why all this ridiculous talk. The illegals go to jail for breaking our laws, serve their time as we would and are turned loose like us who are legal. The question is Why aren't they deported? As it was said in another article that involved the Mayor state then federal. Opps isn't the mayor involved with that commitee with Bonnie Rietz to help those who are illegal?? Just asking.

Hey Carl...where did you ever get that idea. You must have voted liberal all the way! It's like people aren't gay....they just have an "alternative life style" right. People who shoot people are not crimminals they are just "free spirits" right Carl. Should we and the Austin Daily Herald just use words to appease every illegal act so it just sounds better and offends no one. No they should not. People who are in this country without legal means are illegal....got it! They are "illegal aliens". Get with it.

Yo Johnnybegood.....let's not forget about our New National Security chief under Obama that redifining the term what a "terriorist" is....boy that left more than a few shaking their head in amazement....isn't it amazing how some people are so far off the norm that it leaves 99.9% of us dumbfounded!

Hey posters.....I think we just been cleverly duped by Carl Sack comments....I think he really agrees with us....here's why.....In the African/American community if a white person uses the N word it's a slap in the face.....If a black person uses it to another black person it's like a friendly greeting....he knows this....therfore he knows that an illegal will act offended by the term if used by a legal.... and yet if an illegal calls another illegal it would be construed as a friendly gesture.....This Carl Sack is one very clever guy and has ever so cleverly "pushed" our buttons....I'm awarding him "5 stars"

Here in the hinterland, we can call something what it is... straight talk. The political correct liberals seem to want to view the world the way they wish it was rather than the way it is. They are illegal immigrants, plain and simple.

This is a load of CRAP!!!!! I don't care about "their feelings" they are breaking the law! I can think of a lot worse to call them.
