The crowd chanting in an effort to drown out Samuel Johnson.

Immigration protest brings out two sides

A back-and-forth protest in front of the government center Wednesday afternoon had two sides of the immigration debate in a verbal sparring match.

Starting at 2 p.m. and ending around 4, the protest pitted people who want to crack down on illegal immigration against people who disagree with their message. In all, those organized filled most of the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue Northeast.

The protest was originally scheduled by Samuel Johnson, Austin resident and member of the National Socialist Movement, to rally against illegal immigration. To counter Johnson, a number of people came out with signs supporting human rights and decrying Nazism.

Johnson, along with friend and fellow NSM member Robert Hester, took turns talking into a microphone in front of the granite memorial on the center’s lawn. That prompted the opposing crowd, gathered near Main Street, to respond with a variety of chants, including a Barack Obama-inspired, “Yes we can.”

Johnson said before the rally that illegal immigration is a problem in Austin, and elsewhere, because of U.S. citizens losing jobs.

“We want to motivate the people of Austin to stand up to corrupt officials and corrupt organizations,” he said.

During the rally, Johnson told the crowd, “Our country is under attack from a Third World country.”

Robert Reimers, a recent Austin High School graduate in attendance, disagreed with Johnson’s message.

“They’re wrong. America was made of immigrants,” he said. “Without them, America would be nothing.”

Also in attendance and siding with Reimers was Tom Fiske, Socialist Workers Party candidate for Minneapolis mayor.

“An assault on immigration rights is an assault on workers,” Fiske said, adding that America can’t have segregated working classes.

Austin resident and stay-at-home dad Steve Simon said he was protesting illegal immigration not because of race, but because of jobs.

“I’m fighting for him,” he said, pointing to his baby, “so he can have a job.”

Austin police were scattered around the protest, but no altercations broke out. At one point, one member from each side came to the center of the two groups for a face-to-face talk, but the two were relatively peaceful. The groups also did a lot of fist shaking and yelling at each other, but nothing escalated.

aryan66-- quit sending me threatening emails. so there is no such thing as a mexican american? mexicans are not the only immigrants that are in this country. And you also stated that "there is more than one of us in the area if you don't agree with us then u r the enemy". Real nice! See I told people they were here to recruit! You have your opinion and I have mine. But you have crossed the line by threatening me.

===========================================

and your an idiot, the immigrants who came here LEGALLY and went through Ellis Island and were checked for medical problems, those people were not allowed in the country.
Most of the people today are not coming here legally, they are smuggled in and over stay visas We dont know who they are ( some carry as many as 8 different ID cards at one time or another), if they carry and diseases, if they have any criminal history in the country they come from, or are gang members.

Since you supposedly just graduated, you apparently did not learn the different between LEGAL and ILLEGAL. go back to school and study some more

Today we have millions of people out of work in this country. We have people living in shelter homes and on the streets. We have no business letting anymore people come into this country legally or other wise to live. The people who are here in Austin Illegally are not to blame, they are just looking for a better life- it is the fault of Hormel and the people who run this town. They have bent over backwards to encourage these people to come to Austin. You can hardly get a job here in Austin unless you speak Spanish. We are provinding low income housing for these people, the law doesn't even care that these people coming here do not have Social Security cards - during tax time they are given a special number to file. They then have the nerve to complain because they don't get more tax credits!

I find this quite amusing. The ADH and the police could be at this rally but no one I mean NO ONE could take the time to write a blurp in this paper about the Walk for Mental Health which was held on May 29 in this town. The ADH and KAAL were called but no one had time. I think there is to much time spent on this crap and not enough time spent on the real issues. I find it funny you all complain about Mexican being here yet when they are in the jail they don't seem to get sent back even when ICE knows they are there.

Something needs to be done but having a group that just spreads hate and racism is not the way to go.

I'm no fan of what illegal immigration costs this community, but I'd rather have the illegals than the neo-Nazi skinheads.

Posted by Big (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 6:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

let's be honest... if a legal immigrant walked in to hormel and applied for a job- they would be just as likely to get it as an illegal... and further more- i bet hormel would LOVE to have english speaking american workers... but, there just aren't enough here... i will never pick strawberries for a living, but i sure love eating them- so, go ahead and sneak across the border to ensure that i get cheap berries...

Posted by cabinman (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 8:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I disagree with you Big, Hormel's wants the employees that will work for the cheapest rate no matter what. By hiring people who are willing to work for less they undermine the efforts of other employees and the union to earn more.

As I said earlier, this is a huge problem but I do not want neo-Nazi's anywhere near my town or this issue. I think they hurt the cause for reform a lot more then they help it.

I can't believe you people. Mr. Johnson and Mr Hester. I would just like to ask one question. What country did you come from? Oh yeah, You must have come from Nazi Germany along with all of your other lost (souls) relatives.
Why are you in this country? Are you here legally? Yep, I bet your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, came from somewhere. ya think> Do you suppose they came here for a better life. Someone taking over someones job just like those people that came over on Ellis Island. Get a clue and get out of town. It's pretty pathetic that you have to pick on an 18 year old that has a good head on his shoulders about the FREE, yes I said FREE country that we live in.

i was an onlooker yesterday and i was dissappointed. i could not hear what johnson was saying cause the 'other group' was so loud. i have lived in this town for over thirty years, i have seen the changes here in austin and they r not good changes. illegals need to be caught and sent back to where they came from, and if they r not ....why dont we just let all the criminals go. breaking the law is breaking the law.. no matter what the reason. legal immigrants do have rights too, but illegal immigrants should be sent home. the issue is not about nazis.., or race..... its about being legal!!

Posted by beachratcarpenter (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Their's nothing wrong with legal immigration, as long as it's done properly, if you had a dam, it controls the flow of water down stream, break that dam and what happens down stream, you have no control. Thats why we have legal immigration. Thats why the law makers in 1986 made the Simpson/Mazzoli immigration reform and control act.(google it) The law is like a (3) legged stool, If enforced properly, it's sturdy. Don't, and what happens, it collapes. What we need now is more border enforcement, keep the fence going, enforce all laws,no more birtright citizenship,(their ' bills in congress right now)fine employer's for hiring illegals, Mandate and use E-verify. (it's 96% accurate)

Posted by coldtruth (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 11:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Lets all just sit back and think about the situation that has escalated to this point. The illegals want work, well so do all the american citizens. How do u give any rights to someone who has broken every law as they illegally step across the border? They want to live here then follow the procedures to become a legal american citizen!!! The illegals not only smuggle themselves into our country but they try to sell off children and better yet the massive amounts of drugs that they they smuggle into the US, well guess where the drugs will end up...in your child's hands.
And how RUDE was that group to come in and call names to the people trying to listen. Look up the term Nazi. There were no Nazi's there. Just some people trying to listen to Johnson, but no the inconsiderate, uneducated law-breakers just always have to try and have their last word, and just as they are illegal Im sure what they did yesterday was not "the proper way" to go about their own diluted opinions. Go back to your own country.

To fantasia. Where in the us are you from? Yes everyone wants a better life but dong it in athe same manner that everyone else has to do. The Illegals are no exception. Maybe your the Nazi since thats the only word you seem to know.

The only thing that motivates the people who organized the rally yesterday is hate.

Posted by formeraustinian (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 12:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To "Coldtruth": Check out the NSM on the web. You will find they lean toward the "white is superior" attitude, which, if I remember correctly, was the Nazi motto. And not all of those people demonstrating against the NSM were illegals. As in any culture, you have good people and those that cause trouble and break laws. There are just as many bad whites as there are bad people of any other culture. It's going to take individuals with attitudes like Mr. Reimers that are going to solve this problem, not the Hesters and Johnsons who are motivated by hate!

Posted by Grumpus (anonymous) on June 4, 2009 at 1:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Samuel Johnson and his ilk do more harm than good to the immigration reform cause. They make it easier for an uninformed public to equate negative commentary about illegal immigrants with racism, and Johnson and his neo-Nazi ilk. But you'll find out all about that on your own, if skinheads ever bring their sort of 'movement' to town for any length of time. The first burnt cross in a front lawn will do nicely as an 'I told you so'.

There are so many barriers to solving this particular problem in this particular town. First and foremost, the primary employer of illegals must receive a 72-hour notice before one ICE official sets foot on company property, as the company is a government contractor.

The best advice for us all has already been given: Petition your representatives to mandate that all hires be ran through the E-verify system. Do that, and you'll be reading a lot less stories about three-time deportees making the news in Austin AGAIN.

I don't care what they say to try and cover up the actual meaning of all of their shaved heads and nazi signs! coldtruth--if you are looking for a job, QPP is always hiring. No Birthright to new babbys of people who are not in the system or already Legal If we do not know who or where the mother and father are from or Up to , if if turns out the parents are sent back , why does the U.S.A. want to split up familys. just this, would greatly fix the Big illegal question..... real fast, and the others would learn some english and go the legal way , just like the people did for the last 100 years, or we should change the laws and let anyone come here for a better life. IT IS TOO BAD that so many countrys mostly down south do not work for the good of their own people. too too bad for everyone......you would think the church would have said something by now.....why Not? i wonder.....

So typical, any time you want to cloud a issue, bring in the race card, that one does'nt hold water anymore! (GOOGLE)Simpson/Mazzoli Immigration Reform and Control Act (1986) Now thats law, end of discussion, abide by it.

Posted by coldtruth (anonymous) on June 5, 2009 at 6:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

AMEN beachratcarpenter!! Once again, the rally was not based on hate. It is citizens wanting EQUAL rights for everyone that derserves them and if you are an illegal then you should not have any rights until you have went through the process to become a legal citizen.
To justivin: I have had many hard working jobs and back 20 years ago we didnt have this issue of being short on jobs is when QPP wasnt the only place to work. BUt hey thats where all the illegals are migrated to work so I guess thats why ud suggest that place huh?
U want to be here thats fine and I have no probs with that but when u go about it illegally and go as far as to use an innocent hard-workers SS#, thats when its personal!! Whats your answer for that justlivin? I have worked hard my whole entire life and just 3 years ago an illegal was using my #. They ruined my credit, and tried stealing my ID. Here I sit helpless, trying to fix my credit in which I never messed up. And the illegal thats used it...we pay for him while he sits in federal prison awaiting to be set free to do it all over again! If they were here legally, I wouldnt have to worry about ID/SS theft, because LEGALLY you would have your own! Illegals are no exception for breaking the laws! NONE!! When the laws are trying to be enforced you illegals should stop crying discrimination to.

Yes Tanner... Ask the American Indian what happens when you dont control immigration??? I know what happens, my dad told me about my great grandpa not wanting to be put in a corner of land that had nothing to offer. Bottom line, screw the race card, I am not racsist. But, come here legally. go thru the channels. I know people who have, i have friends that have. Its only hard if you make it that way.

"coldtruth" - I'm sorry to hear of your troubles; it has to be very difficult to be objective when you've been subjected to that experience. I still stand by my opinion of Mr. Johnson and Mr. Hester and the NSM. I've seen these types come into a community and attempt to incite people with anger and hate rhetoric. The US has a problem with illegal immigrants. There are many sides to this issue and it is going to take a lot of work by all of us to resolve. I do agree that employers should be using the e-verify and it is true that QPP/Hormel receive notice before ICE comes to town, but we can't let the hatemongers take over Austin. The type of thoughts the NSM wants to instill in citizens won't do anybody any good!!

Posted by hipptyhoohah (anonymous) on June 6, 2009 at 8:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I hate to tell you ignorant people, but Mr. Johnson is in no way involved with anything Nazi related. Who are you to judge? Mr Johnson is trying to make a better future for all of our children. Yes, our families were all immigrants, but they had to go through a process to become legal. My grandparents included who are large contributors to Austin's community. There's a difference between being a white supremacist and trying to get rid of the ILLEGAL Mexicans so the LEGAL members of the community can work and support their families in this recession.
Fantasia, I hate to tell you sweetie, but there is a huge difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. Families who came here looking for a new chance back in the day had to go through strict procedures to be accepted into our country. Those are the people that make up a lot of the original population of Austin. We never had problems with work until the illegals came. When your kids are having food taken out of their mouths because of illegals, you'll begin to think more on a common sense level.

Posted by pandulche (anonymous) on June 6, 2009 at 4:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

hipptyhoohah, if Sam Johnson is no way involved with anything Nazi related... How do you explain this ad on a neo-nazi website advertizing the rally, complete with his e-mail "whitearyan71?" http://www.nsm88.org/events/rallyagainst... How do you explain it being published in the Albert Lea Tribune, The Austin Daily Herald, on KTTC news, and other sources that he is a member of the NSM? How do you explain the fact that Mr. Johnson said in public at the rally that he has read Mein Kampf and that it "makes sense?" You are clearly the ignorant one!

And 1488, the counter demonstration was not led by the SWP. There were only two SWP members who came down from the Twin Cities to join the counter-demonstration. The largest group of counter-demonstrators were Austin High School students who organized independently, although there were other groups such as QPP workers and FLMN Minnesota. Also, La Raza is a shortened form for "La Raza Cosmicá," or "the cosmic race," meaning a mixed people of Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans, united together here in the Americas. It is not racist to include people of all races. That doesn't even make sense.

There should be no tolerance for anyone sympathizing with the Nazis. If you aren't aware of the program of their movement, they believe that only white heterosexuals of pure European heritage should be citizens and that everyone else should be deported. (here is their program: http://www.nsm88.org/25points/25pointsen... ) This is so completely criminal and reactionary. It should make you angry that these people are trying to organize in Austin. If it does, come out and join the anti-nazi to support full rights and equality for all immigrants the next time they try to organize and watch them fail miserably!

Dear 1488,

If you take credits from the NSM, it means that you have to agree with what this party says, so it still a huge message of hate more than saying facts, USA fought against the NSDAP during the world war II and Johnson wants to establish with the idea of this party, a new and better America? This is the most stupid idea I have ever heard in my life and he should not have the right of speech since he agrees with a party that broke all oh the Humans rights ever made, including free speech. He should be the one who will be moved away from USA.

He thinks he is a part of the NSM but, what is the NSM? It's a party that wants to make the best race on Earth, which is the Aryen, omnipresent. But the dumb thing comes : Let see, how can an American be part of that community when he is not even pure blood, as what thought the leader of the party, Adolf Hitler? He can't, so Samuel Johnson and all of his American Nazis friends lost all of their credibility by just saying that.

Now, I see your devotion to the 88, I hope you know that this number means the death of a big number of your American friends and your great White America. So in a certain way you are an enemy of your own country, I didn't know that someone could be that stupid. You agree with the Nazi party so you agree with the holocaust which is a human act of terrorism, doesn't your country fight against that? So You fight against yourself which is not the smartest thing to do when you want to make people agree with you, the only thing you're going to do is kill your own country and your own kind.

I can't take your party seriously and I don't think anyone who is well educated and has a little bit of a brain can either.

My last point would be that the Nazi party took place in Germany after the first world war when this country was in depression and its people were without hope and I don't think it's the case of American people, so good luck with that.

By the way I'm not Mexican or even American, I'm French and my country suffered a lot from this racism and no tolerance party, but I think I have to let people know the truth about what people like Johnson and his Nazi buddy can do to the world. And don't even think that I shouldn't talk because I don't live in your country, because Human rights concern the whole world.

Now think twice before you speak and everyone will be happy, and I hope, that’s what you want.

Posted by valentin (anonymous) on June 7, 2009 at 2:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

1488,

I believe that you are an old grumpy man who didn't graduate from high school so you can't find a job because of that and you blame the immigrants, they helped USA by doing the dirty and painfull jobs because you "the superior race" couldn't do it, and you want to send them back? Your ideas don't make sense.

The jobs went away because of the company that wanted to make more money and you are stupid enough to think that it's the immigrants because your granpa or whatever told you that. You are the big american stereotype, you don't even have your own ideas, you and your friends keep saying the same thing over and over again, I don't even know why and I don't really want to know anyway.

You can be against illegal immigrations but please don't make yourself look dumb by saying you're a nazi, you may think it's fun but a lot of people don't like that even within your superior race power i don't know what.

And everytime I read you, that makes me laugh, i bet you're a comedian or something because "Equals right for whites" Seriously how did you come up with that? You want more rights? Do the illegals have rights? Are they citizens? The thing you don't get is that it creates a balance, they don't have citizens rights they have some other made for them, you have citizen rights, you don't have the same as them, it doesn't go further.

I'm not really sure what you said but don't tell me Johnson isn't a Nazi. And I still can't take your Nazi thing seriously even if there was a movement like that earlier in the USA it is still the funniest part. I'll keep laugh at you until you'll get why and, maybe if you understand and get smarter, change your mind because, okay there are bad illegal immigrants that not even I want, but is that all of the illegals? Do all of the immigrants still cars, kill everybody or whatever else you can find? I don't think so and I'm sure not.

You say 88 wich is "heil hitler" but do you know that he doesn't want you to say that? Hitler didn't like you, doesn't like you, and probably will never like you, keep going it makes me laugh.

I already told you you were a funny guy, but the last part for my plane was seriously the best, write it again when you answer please, I'll be so happy and maybe I'll join your desperate cause. You know you're not going to go far and when you'll see your party falling appart the only thing you'll have for yourslef will be shame, go for it.

Sincèrement, un français dévoué contre le nazisme et l'imbécilité humaine.
