Austin man charged with aggravated forgery

APD says forgery cases a priority

Published Thursday, July 2, 2009

An Austin man appeared in court Wednesday on felony forgery charges, a crime that the police chief said his department has seen more frequently recently.

Rodolfo Hernandez-Gaspar, 38, faces two counts of aggravated forgery for possessing fraudulent documents, including a Quality Pork Processors work stub and state ID, according to a court complaint.

Chief Paul Philipp said police have been faced with more forgery cases lately, many of which have been tied to drug investigations in Austin.

“(Forgery) is one of our many priorities,” Philipp said of the rising problem.

Police responded to a call of a suspicious man in a vehicle Monday afternoon. Hernandez-Gaspar was allegedly in a green car in an alley behind 801 Fourth Ave. N.E. when police confronted him.

When asked for ID, Hernandez-Gaspar only produced a card from Iglesia Pentecostes Church, and seemed reluctant to do so, the complaint states. Police asked him if he had any other form of ID and the man said no. Hernandez-Gaspar also said he didn’t work in Austin.

Police found a paycheck from Quality Pork Processors written to “Omar Garcia.” Hernandez-Gaspar first said it was a friend’s before admitting it was his, according to the complaint.

Hernandez-Gaspar was then searched, and police found a fraudulent state ID and QPP work card.

Hernandez-Gaspar was taken to the Mower County Law Enforcement Center for further questioning. He said he had been using the alias to work and that he received a birth certificate and Social Security card from a friend, which were able to get him a state ID.

Hernandez-Gaspar is in custody and is scheduled for a July 9 arraignment. Bail is set at $50,000, or $20,000 with conditions.

Isn't this like the 3rd story in the past two weeks regarding some kind of forgery/fraud related to hiring practices at both QPP and Hormel...hmmm...seems to me their hiring practices as it relates to employment verification and immigration status needs some fine tuning....

Nope - the story has really very little to do with QPP and Hormel. It has everything to do with solid law enforcement and the fact that the illegal workers here have very good fake documentation.

Part of the problem is that QPP looks the other way. Even when it is right in their face, they choose to play dumb. They do all sorts of things at that plant that are unethical and illegal. But unfortunately no one does anything because they are so well protected by Hormel. If ICE were to pay a good visit to the QPP plant and actually look into things, the whole place would be shut down and many memebers of management would be fined and some possibly sent to jail. Everything from hiring practices, safety issues, employee treatment, discrimination and on and on it goes. But when things get too hot they trot out Dale Wicks to say some blurb about how wonderful they are or how much they are committed to following the letter of the law. He him self knows how many illegal aliens there are at the plant but he will not do anything about it. If this really was a fair and free country all of the folks who have been mistreated by QPP would actually stand a chance at having the curtain pulled back and all the horrid truth be revealed at what they have been doing for years and are doing right now. We can all bitch here all we want. Nothing will happen until they decide to be ethical, honest and good. But we all know that the ones who profit most will never let that happen because they don't really care about Austin, they care about their pocketbooks. Bottom line is that we will always have immigration issues until those who facilitate the prosperity of illegal aliens are held accountable just as much, if not more, than the illegal aliens themselves. It's a ridiculous thing to see an illegal alien put in jail, deported and then back in town within a matter of weeks. Trust me, we have all seen it. There is so much more to fixing this problem than just cleaning house in the meat packing plants. It is true the comment that was made earlier about housing. What about government and non profit agencies that serve these people as well? This is a large scale issue that cannot be fixed by merely putting the focus on one area. And some other food for thought. The reason that the ID's get past companies that use government verifcation programs is because the documents are not fake. They are real. They may have been stolen, purchased or even given by a cousin or another family member. Those people should also be held responsible for knowingly assisting another person to live, work and receive assistance as a citizen under another identity as well. So many parts, so few willing to make the hard choices to fix the problem.
