County to allocate $340,000 to outside agencies
Published Monday, January 12, 2009
The Mower County Board of Commissioners approved the highly anticipated general fund allocations to outside agencies last Tuesday.
More than $340,000 was allocated to 21 outside agencies from the county’s general fund.
Beginning with human services disbursements, Semcac Community Action will receive $2,000; senior citizen organizations at Lyle, LeRoy, Grand Meadow, Brownsdale and Sargeant will receive $600 each; and the Mower County Seniors, Inc. will receive $45,000.
The Mower County Chore Program for income eligible senior citizens will receive $36,000.
The Youth Activity Center in Austin will receive $15,000.
In the category of environment and housing, the commissioners allocated $151,930 to the Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The Mower County Agricultural Society (Fair Board) will receive $22,000.
The Mower County Historical Society will receive $35,000.
The Southeast Minnesota Regional Water Resources Board will receive a $4,000 allocation.
Under economic development, the commissioners decided to disburse $20,000 to the Development Corporation of Austin.
Development Corporations at Grand Meadow and LeRoy will receive $3,000 each.
The Development Corporation of Adams will receive $1,200 and Development Corporations at Lyle and Brownsdale will receive $600 each.
The Southeast Minnesota Initiative Fund will receive $1,000 from Mower County and the Southern Minnesota Tourism Council will receive $500.
County coordinator Craig Oscarson explained that disbursements under $5,000 are made in a single payment, while disbursements over $5,000 are made on a quarterly basis by the county.
The disbursement to the Mower County Agricultural Society is for repairs and to be shared among the Fair Board, 4-H and Historical Society. The annual general fund disbursements at the first meeting of the new year formally concludes the lengthy process that began last summer when requests were first received by the county from outside agencies. When the county’s proposed budget was announced last September, the agencies could appeal the decision of the county finance and purchasing committee.
After the appeals were heard and the Truth in Taxation hearing held in December, the disbursements were finalized.

As always, not a dime given to the Mower County Humane Society. The MCHS not only rescues animals from the streets, but also from the City of Austin pound--resulting in saving the city several dollars a year.
