County moves ahead with Robbins demolition
Published Wednesday, January 7, 2009
The Mower County Board of Commissioners authorized the county engineer Tuesday to set the date for demolition of the Robbins Furniture and Design Gallery buildings to run concurrent with the asbestos clean-up in the buildings, when a contract is awarded for that work.
Commissioner Ray Tucker made the motion and said the “earliest possible date” be chosen. Awarding a contract for asbestos removal was delayed a week pending the receipt of more information. The acquisitions of the northeast corner of the Robbins block from Tom Sherman and others for $75,000 was also announced. The money will come from the county’s reserve contingency fund and completes the acquisition of all available properties for the county’s new geothermal well field and parking lot.
In other acquisition business, the final payment of $20,000 has been made to Kevin Soiney, owner of George’s Pizza. The county acquired his business in the Robbins block along with Thoroughbred Carpet and Robbins Furniture and Design Gallery.
Soiney received $30,000 of the $50,000 relocation allowance from the county when he announced his willingness to sell his property and relocate.
