Riverland hosts welding contest

16 area high schools participating today at Albert Lea campus

— The Riverland Community College Industrial Maintenance and Mechanics Repair (IMMR) program is hosting the 3rd Annual Welding Contest today for students from 16 area high school schools: Albert Lea, Austin, Dover-Eyota, Garner, Hayfield, Jackson, Lake City, Le Center, Mable/Canton, Mayo, Medford, Nicollet, Owatonna, Spring Grove, Waterville/Elysian/ Morristown, and Zumbrota/ Mazeppa.

The Riverland IMMR program trains students in the maintenance and repair of industrial equipment including operation of  lathes, mills, drills and small tool used for machine repair.

The program also focuses on boilers, hydraulics, pneumatics, piping, sheet metal, electrical, bearings and seals, blueprint reading, preventative/predictive maintenance, safety and welding.

Welding classes include Oxy Acetylene, SMAW, GTAW and GMAW. The program includes preparation for the state boiler exams.
