Each elementary will get 2 additional classrooms

Room needed to accommodate growing enrollment at Woodson

Published Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The Austin Public School District has awarded a contract for bids for classroom renovation projects in all four elementaries.

JD Driver, LTD of Rose Creek submitted the lowest bid at $280,000 for the project, which includes adding two classrooms each to Banfield, Neveln, Sumner and Southgate. Two other companies submitted bids: Joseph Company, Austin, at $296,000 and Wagner Construction, Austin, at $284,700.

Lori Volz, director of finance and operations, said the projects are needed in anticipation of larger classes moving up from Woodson Kindergarten Center. The increased enrollment at Woodson is attributed to the implementation of all-day, everyday kindergarten a few years ago.

“This is the most cost-efficient way of renovating some existing space,” Volz said.

Bids were also awarded for Austin High School tuckpointing to Western Waterproofing Co. of Minneapolis, who submitted the lowest bid of nine companies at $68,900.

The 2009 masonry restoration and tuckpointing project will primarily be focused on the north end of the high school building.
