County crunches budget numbers

Published Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The Mower County Board of Commissioners wants county staff to prepare budget numbers to crunch … immediately.

According to finance committee chairman, Ray Tucker, 2nd District, the county board’s budget committee will present final budget figures to department heads soon.

"Then, they will have time to make their appeals," Tucker said.

The budget committee has received requests from department heads to fund programs and services in fiscal 2009.

The numbers have been fine-tuned by county finance director Donna Welsh, the county coordinator and other budget committee members.

The committee will hear department heads’ appeals Nov. 6.

David Hillier, 3rd District and chairman of the county board’s personnel committee, said he wants the information “as soon as possible” to help make recommendations on personnel requests submitted by the department heads.

Oscarson said the information could be available at "week’s end."

The county’s Truth In Taxation hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4.

Mike Hanson, the Mower County highway department engineer, received the commissioners’ endorsement to make the final payment of $124,241 to Ulland Bros., Inc. for the Mower County CSAH No. 2 resurfacing project.

The heavily-traveled east-west artery between Lansing and Brownsdale was completed reconstructed and then resurfaced for $1.87 million.

According to Hanson, the amount was $100,000 less than the engineer’s estimated cost.

The commissioners also agreed to release a letter of credit to Wal-Mart, Inc. for successfully completing the required infrastructure for their new Supercenter along 18th Avenue Northwest.

According to Hanson, the required turning lanes, two traffic signals and other improvements were made by the business.

The city of Austin and Austin Utilities have already released the letter of credit to Wal-Mart Inc.

Hanson also received the commissioners’ approval to enter into a lease with the city of Adams to rent a garage November through April at Adams.

The shop building is used during the winter by the highway department.

The new rent is $650 per month, the county engineer told the commissioners.

$40 million could be easily saved before it is too late. Stop the justice center boondoggle!

Don't our elected officials understand that it is money of its citizens that they are wasting? Maybe they should contact commissioner Dan Belshan over in Freeborn county about how much a new justice center really costs to operate.
