Ian Stauffer/Owatonna Peoples Press Austin's Haley Splinter leads Mankato East's Amanda Blain (5) and a large pack of runners during the Big Nine Conference cross country meet Tuesday at Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna.
The Austin boys cross country team had its best finish in at least 12 years when it took second in the Big Nine meet in Owatonna Tuesday.
The Packers finished with 96 points, which was behind only Owatonna, which had a 36.
“The boys had a huge day,” Austin head coach Tony Einertson said. “We started in the back at the beginning and let everybody run in front of us. We made up a lot of ground over the last mile.”
Austin had three runners in the top-15 and they averaged 16:58 per runner.
“If you’re under 17 minutes you’re doing pretty good,” Einertson said. “They performed extremely well.”
Kyle Dammen took fifth with a career-best time, Kevin Dammen took 12th with a career best time, and Christian Folken took 15th with a course-best time and Tim Erickson took 24th with a course-best time.
Both of the Dammen’s made first team All-Big Nine, and Folken and Erickson were Honorable Mention.
The Austin girls team finished 10th place on the day, but eighth grader Haley Splinter improved her career best time by 27 seconds as she took 12th and made the All-Big Nine team.
“It’s a nice accomplishment for Haley and it’s something the girls program can build on,” Einertson.
The Packers will compete in the Section 1AA cross country meet next Thursday in Owatonna. The top two teams advance to state and the top 10 individuals advance as well.
“We’ve got an outside shot to get the whole boys team there and a pretty good shot to get some individuals,” Einertson said.
