The Hayfield girls basketball team hit a few speed bumps, but it ended up on the winning side of a 56-25 score over LeCenter in the first round of the Janesville/Waldorf/Pemberton Invite Friday.
The Vikings (1-0 overall) struggled with turnovers as the team adjusted to a new uptempo style of offense.
“We were stuck on 5-2 for about the first six minutes and we threw it away about six times over that span,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “It took us a little while to get out of the blocks."
Hayfield's Jordyn Krekling had 11 points and nine steals, while Kiley Severson had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Hayfield forced 20 turnovers on the night.
The Vikings will play for the tournament title Saturday at 8 p.m. against Kasson/Mantorville.
“It’ll be a great test for us to see where we are with our new style,” Kindschy said.
Hayfield scoring: Severson, 17; Krekling, 11; Megan Leckness, 8; Beth Felten, 6; Renee Stier, 4; Kayla Garness, 3; Alyssa Selk, 3; Liz Ristau, 2; Molly Streightiff, 2
