Gabrielson readies for post
Published Monday, November 10, 2008
The last new face on the Mower County Board of Commissioners arrived after the 2006 election, when Dave Tollefson unseated incumbent Garry E. Ellingson.
Now, that new face belongs to Tim Gabrielson, who will be sworn-in in January as the District No. I county commissioner.
Gabrielson defeated Dan Vermilyea in the Nov. 4 election.
Both candidates were vying for the seat on the county board held for 32 years by Richard P. Cummings, who chose not to seek re-election to another four-year term.
Gabrielson, an insurance man, defeated Vermilyea, a farmer and Steele County feedlot enforcement officer, 2,382 to 1,278.
Gabrielson over-whelmed Vermilyea 1,239 to 428 in city of Austin’s Ward I, Precinct I; the first of eight voting precincts in District No. I.
Vermilyea won three of the eight voting precincts: Waltham and Udolpho townships and the village of Waltham.
Raymond Tucker, incumbent, won a fourth four-year term as District No. II’s representative on the county board.
Tucker defeated challenger Sarah Douty 2,068 to 1,877.
There are 20 voting precincts in District No. II, which comprises the eastern two-thirds of Mower County and is, of course, geographically the largest of the five commissioner districts.
Tucker edged Douty in 12 of the 20 voting precincts.
The challenger, a former Adams City Council Member and Adams Township Board member, was victorious in the city of Adams, Adams Township, Bennington Township, city of LeRoy, LeRoy Township, Lodi Township, city of Racine and city of Sargeant.
Tucker, a tiling contractor, who is a former Dexter City Council Member and Dexter volunteer firefighter, won easily in the city of Dexter and Dexter Township, as well as Clayton Township, city of Elkton, Frankford Township, city of Grand Meadow, Grand Meadow Township and Pleasant Valley Township en route to his Nov. 4 re-election.
The area encompasses the vast majority of Mower County’s wind turbines and Tucker has been a champion of wind energy development since its inception in the county.
Four townships held elections Nov. 4 instead of the traditional annual election date in March:
Bennington Township: Mark A. Carman was re- elected to the township board with 88 votes.
Paul E. Main was re-elected township clerk with 84 votes.
A total of 97 votes were cast in the township election.
Frankford Township:
Ron Vogt defeated Johnathan Nesbitt, 150 to 54, to win re-election to the township board.
Diane Hanson, who was unopposed, was re-elected township clerk with 198 votes.
A total of 214 people voted in the township election.
Grand Meadow Township: Paul Snyder was re-elected with 181 votes.
A total of 204 people voted on Election Day.
Sargeant Township: Randall Gronseth was re-elected to the township board with 120 votes and Joanne Kiefer was re-elected clerk with 144 votes.
A total of 171 people voted in the township election.
Blooming Prairie voters re-elected H. Peterson mayor.
Peterson received 607 votes to 430 for challenger Jeffrey Gwilt.
Two council members were re-elected: Mary Kittelson received 915 votes and Jean Linbo, 521.
Hayfield voters returned incumbent Dave Santjer to office with a 561-vote total.
Mary Peterson was re-elected to the city council with 482 votes.
All the results are considered unofficial until canvassing which takes place today.
